To complete this How-To you will need: Self-discipline Sacrifice Open-mindedness Step 1: Ditch the paper Stop buying unnecessary paper products. Use cloth napkins, mop up spills with dishcloths and rags, write shopping lists on the back of junk-mail envelopes, (and stick your coupons inside). Step 2: Give up bottled water Give up bottled water; almost 40 percent of it comes out of the tap anyway. If you don't like the taste of your local water, use a filter. Step 3: Buy less food Buy less food. The average American throws out 25 percent of the food they buy. Start monitoring what you're trashing so you can make better choices when you shop, and make an effort to eat food before it goes bad. SAVE MONEY 2011 TIPSApr 26, 2012
1) I cut my own hair. I bought a $20 buzzer, and it lasts about a year. I used to get a haircut every month, at a cost of $20 (including tip, not including gas money to get there and valuable time spent there). So I save the cost of about 11 haircuts a year. I do the same for my three sons, saving another 36 haircuts (at $10 each). Annual savings: $580. 2) No Cable TV. We watch DVDs, or read. I don't spend much on DVDs either (probably less than most people, per month). Cable costs about $65/month. Annual savings: $780. 3) Became vegan. I eat a lot of fresh fruits and veggies, which are expensive, sure, but you are supposed to eat those whether you're vegan, vegetarian or a carnivore, so I don't count those as extra expenses. The real comparison is between meat, and the protein substitutes I use. Most of my protein comes from tofu, although I do eat beans and soy protein such as fake ground beef or soy burgers. Overall I believe I save about $2-3 per day not eating meat. Annual savings: $900. 4) Don't use the gym. I used to be a member of a gym. Didn't use it much, and still got charged for a full year. Now I get a lot of exercise, but I do it at home and on the road. I do strength exercises in my living room and jog (and will soon start cycling and swimming). Annual savings: $420. 5) Rarely go to the movies. I used to go out to the movies at least once a week, and sometimes more. I slowly made it every other week, and now I don't even go once a month. Now we take the ...

Winter money saving tips for families - with Jasmine BirtlesNov 22, 2011
As the temperature drops, the cost of living can often rise. This is particularly the case for parents, who have to cater for more mouths and dress more bodies! Personal finance expert and founder of MoneyMagpie.com Jasmine Birtles has come up with a series of tips for mums and dads that will help them cut costs this winter. They include tips about heating, clothes, food, socialising and holidays. The advice comes as a recent survey carried out by Clarks Kids asked mums from all over the country about their spending habits and found that many aren't making the best choices to get the value for money they truly deserve. The survey of over 1000 mums looked in particular at the purchasing of kids shoes and found that mums are spending on average at least £10 more on school shoes than they are on Everyday shoes such as boots and trainers because they understand that school shoes are properly fitted, comfy and good for their child's foot health. With the survey showing that kids spend 55.5% of their week wearing school shoes and 44.5% wearing Everyday shoes, it is clear just how important Everyday shoes really are too. If mums invested properly in a stylish, well-fitted, quality pair of Everyday shoes for their kids they would have to replace them less often and would get far greater value for money in the long run.
